The air ducts and vents in your home are like your house’s respiratory system. Every once in a while, it’s recommended to have your air vents professionally cleaned to remove buildup of dust and allergens that otherwise, your family would breathe in.
Did you know that the air quality inside of a home can be worse than the air outside of it?
Yikes! It’s a scary thought, but the air your family breathes while simply relaxing at home can actually make some health conditions worse.
According to the American Lung Association, poor indoor air quality can even cause or worsen infections, lung cancer and chronic lung diseases such as asthma. People who already have lung disease are at greater risk.
Check out this video on how indoor air quality impacts your lungs, and keep reading for tips on how to improve your home’s air quality:
What Can I do to improve air quality in My home?
- Keep your home clean. This deters pests, mold, and keeps the air smelling fresh. Be sure to clean under large kitchen furniture (including the stove and refrigerator) where food might get trapped.
- Reduce humidity. Damp indoor spaces foster the growth of mold, and create a comfortable environment for cockroaches and other pests.
- Target the places where allergens can collect. Common problem spots are beds, carpet, furnishings and clothing. Encase mattresses and pillows and wash bedding with hot water once a week. Remove unnecessary fabrics like curtains and upholstered furniture.
- Remove carpeting. It’s recommended to replace carpeting with smooth flooring in homes with allergic individuals. If this is not possible, regular vacuuming of carpets (two to three times a week) may minimize exposure to allergens. However, vacuuming also can stir up dust and allergens in the carpet and temporarily make air quality worse.
