How often should I have my dryer vent cleaned?
The frequency of dryer vent cleaning depends on several factors, including how often the dryer is used and the size of the household:
- Frequency of use: The more often the dryer is used, the more lint it accumulates, so it may need to be cleaned more frequently.
- Household size: Larger households with more laundry may need to clean their dryer vents more often.
- Pets: If there are pets in the household, especially those that shed a lot, the dryer vent may need to be cleaned more often.
- Type of laundry: Bulky items like towels, blankets, and comforters produce more lint, so the dryer vent may need to be cleaned more often.
In general, dryer vents should be cleaned at least once a year. However, some recommend cleaning them every 6 to 9 months if there are pets or a large family.
Some signs that a dryer vent needs to be cleaned include:
- Clothes take longer to dry
- The dryer or clothing gets very hot
- There is debris around the dryer hose
- The vent hood flap doesn’t open properly
- There is a strange burning smell on clothes
- The laundry room feels hot when the dryer is running
- There is inconsistent airflow from the exhaust vent
- Excess lint appears in the lint trap after each cycle
Lint buildup in dryer vents can create a fire risk. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, failure to clean is the leading cause of over 15,000 dryer-related fires each year.
